Urban Fox - Edinburgh - Review

by - February 22, 2019

So Edinburgh has always been one of my favourite places to visit, whether for a little day trip with friends and family, or a week long adventure! It is full of hidden little treasures that offer unique food, clothing and accessories and you are always bound to find something different down every little cobbled lane.

When I was offered the chance to try out a small restaurant in Edinburgh I couldn't help but say no! 'Urban Fox' in Edinburgh is located about a 20 minute walk from the centre of Edinburgh, or can be reached by car in only 10 minutes if you prefer. When I ventured through, the weather wasn't great, however the trek through wind and rain was completely worth it when we got out food!

First off, the menu was varied with great options whatever your preferences and dietary requirements, so you are bound to find something to your liking. We really struggled to pick our food, their was so much to try but we finally made our minds up (after a lot of debate) and picked our meals.

So for starters, we picked the Salt and Pepper Squid and the Crispy Halloumi. Both were a nice portion and were just enough to get you started without being too heavy.

The Crispy Halloumi was super tasty and the crispy batter was a nice combo with the halloumi itself and added a little texture. It was came with a little side salad too that was dressed beautifully and was a nice compliment with the halloumi. The Squid was cooked to perfection and wasn't in any way rubbery, which I know can happen with a lot of seafood if it is overcooked. The seasoning complimented the squid perfectly and wasn't too overpowering, but was just enough to give the fish a little kick!

I also couldn't wait to try some of their drinks, and went straight for the cocktail list to order our drinks when we got in. I picked a classic French Martini, one of my favourites, and we also got one of the speciality cocktails, recommended by our server, which really was so incredible and went down a treat with our meal. We also tried a Jalapeno Margarita, just because it sounded very intriguing, and even though I am not a huge chilli fan, it was also a treat to have!

So after we had a sip of our cocktails, it was time for our mains. This was tough, as all the dishes on the menu looked incredible, but we eventually decided on the 'Fox Burger' and the 'Roasted Duck Breast'! When we first saw the burger, we only had one word for it... HUGE! It was enormous and was full of fillings and toppings like haggis and onion rings. Nevertheless, it was extremely tasty and the meat was cooked perfectly! I had the duck breast, which is something I don't have a lot, however this has made me realise how much I miss it. The meat was tender and seasoned perfectly, and was portioned perfectly, just enough to fill you up without feeling like it was too heavy!

My duck came with some potatoes and a red wine and rosemary jus on the side, which went with the duck perfectly! I cannot wait to come back to try their other mains, their is so many I really wanted to try!

As full as we were, we were desperate to try some of their delicious sounding deserts! I went for the cheesecake of the day, which was Berry (one of my faves). We also got an Atholl Browse Ice Cream, with whiskey, oats and honey.... I was intrigued by how different it was and thought it would be perfect to finish up with.

The first thing I noticed about the cheesecake was the size... it was humongous, nevertheless I couldn't wait to delve in. It wasn't heavy, something I often find puts me off certain Cheesecakes, and was just sweet enough, without being sickly... the perfect way of finishing off my meal! The Ice cream was something I wasn't sure off, but ended up being super tasty, it wasn't too much and a perfect, light way to finish up and round off dinner....

I really enjoyed my meal at the Urban Fox and I cannot wait to go back again in the future at some point. It is about a 20 min walk from the centre, so might be a bit far out for some people, however if you are willing to head out, it is definitely worth the commute. I would also recommend booking in advance, it is a small cosy restaurant, and is extremely popular...

So would I go back? Definitely! I loved the layout of the restaurant and the decor was inviting and relaxed, perfect for any event or celebration... and their is a great range of food to suit any preferences and dietary requirements. I also really want to try their full range of cocktails too... their are so many I missed out on and can't resist giving a taste!
